If you commonly get one of the following error messages...

• You are nearing your disk quota on Z: Please see a lab assistant for details.
• Unable to open Debug\???.obj for writing
• Invalid filename (for a valid filename).
• Unable to create ???. Access is denied.

To find out for sure, use Start->Programs->Check Disk Quota
The bottom line should show you your current disk usage on \\mrburns\username.$ (Z:)
The columns are: pie chart, status, quota (limit), current usage, and folder name. If you are over, the pie chart will have a red X on it and the status box will say OVR.

If you are indeed over, you simply need to delete some files and wait a few minutes until the quota manager refreshes. Here are some good ways to clean up disk space:

• In WindowsNT Explorer, go to each of your old project folders and delete the Debug subfolder. All of these files are unnecessary as they can be rebuilt from your .cpp files.
• Open Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. Right click each of your project folders and select Clean. This will delete unnecessary intermediates. This essentially does the same as the above.
• When creating a new project, use Project->Settings and then...
  • In C/C++ and change Category to Precompiled Headers. Click "Not using..." to turn them off and save up to 6 MB of disk space per project
  • In General, change the Intermediate Files folder from Debug to c:\temp\Debug. This will also significantly decrease compilation time. Remember to delete this folder from the c: drive before you log out.
• If you use Internet Explorer or Visual Studio Help, you can delete the large number of temporary files they create by deleting the C:\winnt\Profiles\[username]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder. Ignore the warning message. This folder can easily grow to over 10 megs in size. Notes:
  • You will need to logout before this folder is truly deleted and the space cleared up.
  • Deleting the same folder only on the Z: drive does nothing because the folder is copied from C: to Z: every time you log out.
• Images (esp. bmp) and sounds (esp. wav) tend to take up a lot of disk space. If you are storing these on your network drive, you should try to remove them.
• Zip files using maximum compression and then delete them. This way you will still have the files you need, but they will take up less space. Note that text files and bitmaps get much better compression ratios than exe files.

After deleting files, click File->Inquire periodically until the quota manager says that you are under your quota. You will now be able to save your files again.
